Today in science we did an experiment testing the pH range of different house hold items.
Aim: To test the pH range of house hold items.
Equipment: A variety of household chemicals, spotting tile, red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, universal indicator solution, safety glasses.
Method:
1 - Add a few drops of each chemical to a spot on your spotting tile. If a substance is solid or powdered you will need to mix it with a few drops of water before testing it.
2 - Test the chemicals with both litmus papers.
3 - Test each chemical with a few drops of universal indicator.
Discussion: We are finding out if the household item is an acid or base. We do this by getting a household item like floor cleaner for example. The colour it turned with the blue litmus paper was violet, it turned indigo with blue litmus paper and then orange with universal indicator. On the pH scale violet and indigo are bases so floor cleaner is more of a base rather than an acid.
Results: Here is a photo of my results from my sci pad.
