Volcano Experiment

Aim: To make a volcano erupt.

Method:

  1. Glue a 750mL bottle to a piece of cardboard.
  2. Glue scrunched up balls of newspaper to the bottle and cardboard.
  3. Glue strips of paper to the bottle and other parts of news paper.
  4. After it has dried paint it to look like your volcano.
Research: Today Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the European mainland. It's last eruption was in 1944 and it's last major eruption was in 1631.

How do volcanoes form?

On land, volcanoes form when one tectonic plate moves under another. Usually a thin, heavy oceanic plate subducts, or moves under, a thicker continental plate.  When enough magma builds up in the magma chamber, it forces its way up to the surface and erupts, often causing volcanic eruptions.

Difference between lava and magma?

Magma is composed of molten rock and is stored in the Earth's crust. Lava is magma that reaches the surface of our planet through a volcano vent. As they are both molten rock that emerges from below the Earth, it can get confusing identifying one from the other.

Conclusion:

Did it work?

Yes, our volcano did work.

Would you do anything differently?

Make more houses.

Social studies

What I have been learning in social studies :)

I'm gonna mention a few if not all things I have learnt in social studies the past week.
  • Racism towards Muslim community/Zeinab's Writing.
  • Dawn raids/Jacinda Ardern's apology.
  • Asian hate/Simu Liu's post.
These all kind of relate to the same thing, it all has to do with how people treat other races and how racism is such a big thing everywhere. My personal opinion on this all is that it's really sad and upsetting how so many people go through the same type of discrimination just based on their race. Asian people getting called names and bullied just about the corona virus, Polynesian families being dragged out of their homes early in the morning to get taken away and questioned and all of the racism towards Muslim people. None of it is right and I just don't understand how it got this way, I want to help somehow with everything that happens even just by raising awareness helps and knowing that it's wrong.

DNA Extraction Experiment - Science

Aim: To find DNA in kiwifruit.

Method:

- Mush half a kiwifruit in a zip lock bag with a splash of water and small teaspoon of salt.

- Strain the solution through a cloth into a beaker.

- Add a squirt of dish washing liquid and stir.

- Pour into a test tube.

- Place the test tube in a beaker filled with WARM water.

- Leave for 10 mins.

- Slowly pour 5mL of methylated spirits down the side of the test tube.

Results:

Discussion: Where do you find DNA?DNA is located in the nucleus in forms of chromosomes. What makes up DNA? DNA is made up of genes, genes are sections of DNA, your traits like your hair colour, eye colour ect.

Conclusion: Did it work? would you do anything differently? It did work very well we managed to separate the solution and found the DNA. I wouldn't do anything differently.

News Article - Social Studies

Save the sea to see the future

Do you ever think about how much rubbish is actually in the ocean? And how dangerous it is?

Currently our ocean is filled with rubbish. Any kind of rubbish can get into the ocean, from glass bottles to aluminum cans and even medical waste. You may have heard of the great pacific garbage patch, the patch is a place in the pacific ocean that has a surface area of 1.6 million square kilometres which is twice the size of Texas and three times the size of France. Many organizations and companies across the world are doing their best to help clean and eventually decrease the size of the patch and hopefully get it to a point where it can't get any bigger. You may be wondering how the garbage patch came to be, it formed by the pollution in the ocean being pushed towards by ocean currents. The garbage patch and ocean pollution in general is effecting our environment in a negative way because it is killing marine life to the point of extinction and making it hard for humans to use the ocean in the way it is meant to be used.

Not to mention that the ocean produces over half of worlds oxygen and absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere.

There are many things us humans can do to make a difference in ocean pollution and to help our planet from global warming. If we all do our part and not litter, use recyclable products and raise awareness about this situation we can help our ocean and make a change.

Ocean Pollution - Social Studies

In social studies so far this term we have been learning about the ocean and the pollution that is filling it. So far I've learnt that most ocean pollution starts on land and slowly makes it's way into the ocean. Other things that cause marine pollution are oil spills, littering and ocean mining.

The great pacific garbage patch is a place in the ocean where a lot of rubbish has all came together and made a patch. Organizations are currently cleaning it up little by little and say it is not hopeless but will take some effort. The garbage patch came together by all of the rubbish in the ocean being pushed by ocean currents. This garbage patch is effecting our environment in a negative way because it is killing marine life and taking over their homes.

The pollution that is in the ocean isn't just creating patches of rubbish or washing up on shore it is also killing the marine animals. These animals rely on the ocean, it is there home. From eating the rubbish to getting trapped in it and their habitats getting destroyed most marine life are slowly fighting for their lives.

Some things that YOU can do to help prevent more marine pollution is
- Use recyclable products.
- Don't litter.
- Put your rubbish in the right bins.
- Conserve water.
- Use less energy.

Testing for the presence of Oxygen - Science

Testing for the presence of Oxygen

Aim: To carry out a test for the presence of Oxygen Gas (02)
Equipment: A pea-sized amount of manganese dioxide (Mn02), boiling tube, bottle of hydrogen peroxide (H202), safety glasses, wooden splint, Bunsen burner, test tube rack.

Method:
1. Light your Bunsen burner.
2. Add the manganese dioxide to the boiling tube and place it in your test tube rack.
3. Add 2mL of hydrogen peroxide.
4. Light a splint and let it burn for a while.
5. Blow the splint out and insert the glowing embers into the mouth of the boiling tube.

Observations: The mixture rose to the top of the tube after the hydrogen peroxide was added. It also made smoke and bubbles. When we put the
splint in the tube the splint reignited. That happened because if oxygen is present the splint will reignite and that did happen so the experiment
worked.
Discussion: The oxygen gas from both reactants was released which is how the splint reignited.
Conclusion: This experiment went well and it did indeed work.

Marvin Gaye - "What's Going On" - Social Studies

Lyrics -

What's Going On

Tell Me
People Dying
People Crying
Lord Help Us
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Oh, brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
That's Right
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Oh my father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Barricades, can't block our way.
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
(First Chorus)
Oh what's going on
What's going on
Yeah what's going on
Ahh what's going on
What's going on in a world filled with pain
Where's the love for which we pray
What's going on
When our children can't play
Homeless can't eat
There's got to be a better way
What's going on
When we politically blind
Can't see the signs of endangered times
What's going on
Ah tell me
What's going on in the world today
I'd rather be dead
Than turn my head away
We gotta first world vision to? to lift our
Hands in the air and cry for a switch
Father, father
Father help us, come on
Everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Together we can all be strong
United we stand, United we fall
Oh you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Barricades can't block our way
Don't punish me with brutality
Baby talk to me
So you can see
(Second Chorus)
Yeah, what's going on
Hey, what's going on
Somebody tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's goin' on -uh
What's going on 'cross seas
Every minute a child dies by this disease
In record numbers indeed
Got momma's crying out please
My baby hold on
My child ain't done nothing wrong
Still I want to hollar
Ask them why they don't bother
Oh no, oh no
Make me turn to my father
And ask him why they all got a trapped soul
I can feel what was bothering Marvin
Why his words forever remain
Dealing with these modern day problems
'Cause of ignorance surrounding me and my constituents
Too many infected
Too many lives diminishing
Nobody say Protestants, Jews, Blacks, and Whites, Latino's and Asians
Pray together
Less fight
We better unite
As genocide chemical war
And the rich and the poor
Know that God delivers a cure
It's a shame our reality is devastating
People praying for a cure
Dying while they're waiting
Ask the Lord for the comfort and strength to face it
All the kids with dreams
Won't get the chance to chase it
Makes me sad
Think about the lives they would've had
Think about the orphan babies got no moms and dads
How can we sit back and not try to make it right
We gotta come together
We gotta fight for life
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
We got human beings using humans for bombs
But everyone wanna live
Don't nobody really want to die
You feeling me right I can't be watching people die
(Die)
And watching people cry
Let me break it down for a minute
If there's enough room here for you and me
There's plenty of room for some humanity
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
Somebody tell me what's going on

What is the message of the song?
- These lyrics explore themes of not only the Vietnam war but also racism, drug abuse and poverty. This song was inspired by a guy named Benson a member of the group 'the four tops'. Benson witnessed police brutality and and violence while the Vietnam war was going on around him. He wanted to make a song but his members thought of it as a protest song but Benson said it was a song about love, peace and understanding.

Lyrics in the song that give evidence.

- "You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today"

- "Pray together, Less fight
We better unite, As genocide chemical war
And the rich and the poor
Know that God delivers a cure"

2 Perspectives - Beatlemania

There were two perspectives on the Beatles, people who were against the Beatles tour and people who were for the tour.

Against The Beatles tour -

Most elders and religious people were against the beatles tour as they believed The Beatles were leading the youth to sin and trouble making. People who were against the tour seen it as insane and over the top because young teenage girls were going crazy over these men. People were against the tour not only because of the public hassle but because lyrics in the songs which were seen as inappropriate.

For The Beatles tour -

Even though many people were against the tour much more people were for the tour. Young teenage girls were the main fans, they covered the streets and created a fuss which lead people to be against the tour. The girls would hike up their skirts as high as they could, climb over fences, scream and shout just to get attention from The Beatles.

Making Indicators

Aim: To make acid-base indicators using everyday substances.

Equipment: Red cabbage, tea, beetroot, turmeric, cranberry juice, beaker, 100ml hot water, tripod, Bunsen burner, gauze mat, 1.0 moI L -1 HCI and 1.0 moI L -1 Na-OH.

(We don't have Bunsen burners in the science room so we boiled hot water.)

Method:

For Cabbage and Beetroot - Chop the cabbage into small pieces until you have enough to fill 2 cups. Place the cabbage in a large beaker and add water to cover the cabbage. Boil over a Bunsen burner for at least ten minutes for the colour to leach out of the cabbage. Filter out the plant material to obtain a red-purple-bluish colored liquid. This liquid is about pH 7. (The exact colour you get depends on the pH of the water.) Place in a small beaker and leave to the side. Repeat this method for beetroot.

For the tea - Put 100 ml of water in a beaker and boil. Turn off the Bunsen burner and put three bags in the beaker. Remove tea bags when the tea is very strong. Place in a small beaker and leave to the side.

For the cranberry juice - Pour into a beaker and leave to one side.

For the turmeric - Mix 1 teaspoon turmeric in 100 ml cup of alcohol, place in beaker and leave to the side.

Task Two:

1. You now have five beakers, each containing a different indicator.

2. Using a pipette, place 5 ml of the cabbage indicator into two test tubes.

3. Add 5 ml of HCI (acid) to one test tube and 5 ml of NaOH (alkali) to the other test tube.

4. Record the colour change on the table below.

5. Clean the test tubes and repeat for beetroot, tea, cranberry and turmeric indicators.

Strawberry Fields Forever - The beatles

Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever
Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone
But it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me
Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever
No one I think is in my tree
I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't, you know, tune in
But it's all right
That is I think it's not too bad
Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever
Always, no sometimes, think it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream
I think I know I mean a yes
But it's all wrong
That is I think I disagree
Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever
Strawberry Fields forever

Strawberry Fields forever

This song is about a salvation army home in Liverpool where John Lennon used to go. He had fond memories of the place that inspired this song.

What John Lennon says about the song - Lennon (from his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine): "Strawberry Fields is a real place. After I stopped living at Penny Lane, I moved in with my auntie who lived in the suburbs in a nice semidetached place with a small garden and doctors and lawyers and that ilk living around... not the poor slummy kind of image that was projected in all the Beatles stories. In the class system, it was about half a class higher than Paul, George and Ringo, who lived in government-subsidized housing. We owned our house and had a garden. They didn't have anything like that. Near that home was Strawberry Fields, a house near a boys' reformatory where I used to go to garden parties as a kid with my friends Nigel and Pete we would go there and hang out and sell lemonade bottles for a penny. We always had fun at Strawberry Fields. So that's where I got the name. But I used it as an image. Strawberry Fields forever."

Lennon wrote this song whilst he was in Spain working on a movie called "How I won the war."

Significance of WW1 - The last post

When do you hear this song?

- You usually hear this song at a dawn service or back then you would hear it very frequently. Remembrance day/memorials.

Why is this song significant/important to New Zealand?

- To remember those who lost their lives whilst fighting for their countries during WW1. It is known all around the world and everyone recognizes the song.

What is the story behind the last post? Why was it played and when?

- This song was played when the soldiers were ordered to do something or if it was dinner time. It was a sign for the soldiers to move. Kind of like a bell, this sound has been played since the mid 1800's which is a long time before WW1, so this song has been used for many different things even before WW1.

What does this song represent?

- This song represents the fallen soldiers who have gone before us, it's a way we remember them and what they have done for our nation.

During the dawn services it is in a dark setting (dawn) because that is when our soldiers arrived at Gallipoli.

Testing pH - Science

Today in science we did an experiment testing the pH range of different house hold items.

Aim: To test the pH range of house hold items.

Equipment: A variety of household chemicals, spotting tile, red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, universal indicator solution, safety glasses.

Method:

1 - Add a few drops of each chemical to a spot on your spotting tile. If a substance is solid or powdered you will need to mix it with a few drops of water before testing it.

2 - Test the chemicals with both litmus papers.

3 - Test each chemical with a few drops of universal indicator.

Discussion: We are finding out if the household item is an acid or base. We do this by getting a household item like floor cleaner for example. The colour it turned with the blue litmus paper was violet, it turned indigo with blue litmus paper and then orange with universal indicator. On the pH scale violet and indigo are bases so floor cleaner is more of a base rather than an acid.

Results: Here is a photo of my results from my sci pad.

Here are some photos from the experiment too.

Slave Trade Triange - Social Studies

Here is my blog post about slavery and my research that I have done over the past couple weeks.

I chose the song 'Sweet Chariot' by Wallace Walls

Lyrics

Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home, - Take the slaves to heaven or to the northern states (freedom)
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Coming for to carry me home,
A band of angels coming after me, - Being taken to heaven/Harriet Tubman
Coming for to carry me home.

I you get there before I do,
Coming for to carry me home,
Tell all my friends that I’m coming, too, - To see all of the people they got separated from.
Coming for to carry me home.

Meaning: If a slave heard this song they would know that they had to escape. A band of angels are coming to take them to freedom. The underground rail road (sweet chariot) is coming south (swing low) to take the slave from the north to freedom.

Harriet Tubman:

Harriet was a slave who helped release thousands of slaves through underground railroads, they started from the southern slave states where she rescued slaves and then took them on a journey in the railroads to freedom and safety.

How are these events still significant today? This event still really talked about and has effected the African Americans lives till this day, the BLM movement that was started last year made a huge change in history and made the importance of black lives more recognized. \

Here are a few photos of this event -

Atoms Experiment - Science

Aim: To make a model atom

Method:

  1. Choose an atom to make (one between hydrogen and neon)
  2. Work out how many protons, neutrons and electrons it has.
  3. Assign protons and neutrons to a particular colour bead.
  4. Get a ball of blue tac and stick the protons and neutrons to this and make your nucleus.
  5. Cut out the appropriate electron shells and draw on the electrons with vivid.
  6. Connect the nucleus and electron shells with a piece of string.
  7. Create a label to go above the model so people know what you have created.

Results (Pic):

Discussion:

- Atomic and mass number: The atomic number for carbon is 6 and the atomic number is found on the top left corner on every element. The mass number is 12 and is found on the bottom of the box. The mass number at the bottom under the box underneath the element is made up of the protons, electrons and neutrons.

- I chose the element carbon which has 8 protons, 6 electrons and 6 neutrons.

- Electron arrangement: I had to draw 2 electrons on the first shell because a maximum of 2 is allowed in the first shell. I then drew 6 electrons on the second shell which has a maximum of 8 electrons allowed.

- 2 Interesting facts:

  • Carbon gets its name from the Latin word carbo, which means "coal."
  • Carbon makes up 0.032 percent of the Earth's lithosphere (crust and outer mantle) by weight, according to the Encyclopedia of Earth.

Conclusion (Did it work): It did work, after the struggle of making it and working out how to do it, eventually it worked and I successfully hung it up. I would probably make it smaller or lighter next time.
