Bob Geldof and Midge Ure/Live Aid - Social Studies

Who was Bob Geldof? What did he have to do with live aid? 

- Bob Geldof is an Irish singer and musician who achieved success with the group "Boomtown Rats". He also became a leading figurehead in promoting charitable events and debt relief for the developing world and Africa in particular. It was in 1984 when Bob went from a rock star to an international celebrity for raising awareness humanitarian charities. In 1984 Ethiopia and other African countries experienced a severe famine which led to many thousands of people starving to death. The plight of starving children was widely seen on TV. After this concert Bob became more involved with work for non-governmental organisations in Africa, he then became one of the leading spokespeople on Third World debf relief.














Who was Midge Ure? What did he have to do with live aid? 

- Scottish musician Midge Ure was one of the key members of the new band Ultravox, he is/was a guitarist/vocalist. Midge supported Bob with the idea of Live Aid and performed in the concert. 














Bob Geldof with Midge Ure decided to do something about it they released the famous single “Do they Know its Christmas Time”. It was a spontaneous event with many of the best known names in pop music invited. It became an instant best seller selling a record 3 million copies.
