Marvin Gaye - "What's Going On" - Social Studies

Lyrics -

What's Going On

Tell Me
People Dying
People Crying
Lord Help Us
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Oh, brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
That's Right
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Oh my father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Barricades, can't block our way.
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
(First Chorus)
Oh what's going on
What's going on
Yeah what's going on
Ahh what's going on
What's going on in a world filled with pain
Where's the love for which we pray
What's going on
When our children can't play
Homeless can't eat
There's got to be a better way
What's going on
When we politically blind
Can't see the signs of endangered times
What's going on
Ah tell me
What's going on in the world today
I'd rather be dead
Than turn my head away
We gotta first world vision to? to lift our
Hands in the air and cry for a switch
Father, father
Father help us, come on
Everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Together we can all be strong
United we stand, United we fall
Oh you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Barricades can't block our way
Don't punish me with brutality
Baby talk to me
So you can see
(Second Chorus)
Yeah, what's going on
Hey, what's going on
Somebody tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's goin' on -uh
What's going on 'cross seas
Every minute a child dies by this disease
In record numbers indeed
Got momma's crying out please
My baby hold on
My child ain't done nothing wrong
Still I want to hollar
Ask them why they don't bother
Oh no, oh no
Make me turn to my father
And ask him why they all got a trapped soul
I can feel what was bothering Marvin
Why his words forever remain
Dealing with these modern day problems
'Cause of ignorance surrounding me and my constituents
Too many infected
Too many lives diminishing
Nobody say Protestants, Jews, Blacks, and Whites, Latino's and Asians
Pray together
Less fight
We better unite
As genocide chemical war
And the rich and the poor
Know that God delivers a cure
It's a shame our reality is devastating
People praying for a cure
Dying while they're waiting
Ask the Lord for the comfort and strength to face it
All the kids with dreams
Won't get the chance to chase it
Makes me sad
Think about the lives they would've had
Think about the orphan babies got no moms and dads
How can we sit back and not try to make it right
We gotta come together
We gotta fight for life
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
We got human beings using humans for bombs
But everyone wanna live
Don't nobody really want to die
You feeling me right I can't be watching people die
(Die)
And watching people cry
Let me break it down for a minute
If there's enough room here for you and me
There's plenty of room for some humanity
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
Somebody tell me what's going on
(What's going on)
Somebody tell me what's going on

What is the message of the song?
- These lyrics explore themes of not only the Vietnam war but also racism, drug abuse and poverty. This song was inspired by a guy named Benson a member of the group 'the four tops'. Benson witnessed police brutality and and violence while the Vietnam war was going on around him. He wanted to make a song but his members thought of it as a protest song but Benson said it was a song about love, peace and understanding.

Lyrics in the song that give evidence.

- "You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today"

- "Pray together, Less fight
We better unite, As genocide chemical war
And the rich and the poor
Know that God delivers a cure"

2 Perspectives - Beatlemania

There were two perspectives on the Beatles, people who were against the Beatles tour and people who were for the tour.

Against The Beatles tour -

Most elders and religious people were against the beatles tour as they believed The Beatles were leading the youth to sin and trouble making. People who were against the tour seen it as insane and over the top because young teenage girls were going crazy over these men. People were against the tour not only because of the public hassle but because lyrics in the songs which were seen as inappropriate.

For The Beatles tour -

Even though many people were against the tour much more people were for the tour. Young teenage girls were the main fans, they covered the streets and created a fuss which lead people to be against the tour. The girls would hike up their skirts as high as they could, climb over fences, scream and shout just to get attention from The Beatles.

Making Indicators

Aim: To make acid-base indicators using everyday substances.

Equipment: Red cabbage, tea, beetroot, turmeric, cranberry juice, beaker, 100ml hot water, tripod, Bunsen burner, gauze mat, 1.0 moI L -1 HCI and 1.0 moI L -1 Na-OH.

(We don't have Bunsen burners in the science room so we boiled hot water.)

Method:

For Cabbage and Beetroot - Chop the cabbage into small pieces until you have enough to fill 2 cups. Place the cabbage in a large beaker and add water to cover the cabbage. Boil over a Bunsen burner for at least ten minutes for the colour to leach out of the cabbage. Filter out the plant material to obtain a red-purple-bluish colored liquid. This liquid is about pH 7. (The exact colour you get depends on the pH of the water.) Place in a small beaker and leave to the side. Repeat this method for beetroot.

For the tea - Put 100 ml of water in a beaker and boil. Turn off the Bunsen burner and put three bags in the beaker. Remove tea bags when the tea is very strong. Place in a small beaker and leave to the side.

For the cranberry juice - Pour into a beaker and leave to one side.

For the turmeric - Mix 1 teaspoon turmeric in 100 ml cup of alcohol, place in beaker and leave to the side.

Task Two:

1. You now have five beakers, each containing a different indicator.

2. Using a pipette, place 5 ml of the cabbage indicator into two test tubes.

3. Add 5 ml of HCI (acid) to one test tube and 5 ml of NaOH (alkali) to the other test tube.

4. Record the colour change on the table below.

5. Clean the test tubes and repeat for beetroot, tea, cranberry and turmeric indicators.

Strawberry Fields Forever - The beatles

Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever
Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone
But it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me
Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever
No one I think is in my tree
I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't, you know, tune in
But it's all right
That is I think it's not too bad
Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever
Always, no sometimes, think it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream
I think I know I mean a yes
But it's all wrong
That is I think I disagree
Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever
Strawberry Fields forever

Strawberry Fields forever

This song is about a salvation army home in Liverpool where John Lennon used to go. He had fond memories of the place that inspired this song.

What John Lennon says about the song - Lennon (from his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine): "Strawberry Fields is a real place. After I stopped living at Penny Lane, I moved in with my auntie who lived in the suburbs in a nice semidetached place with a small garden and doctors and lawyers and that ilk living around... not the poor slummy kind of image that was projected in all the Beatles stories. In the class system, it was about half a class higher than Paul, George and Ringo, who lived in government-subsidized housing. We owned our house and had a garden. They didn't have anything like that. Near that home was Strawberry Fields, a house near a boys' reformatory where I used to go to garden parties as a kid with my friends Nigel and Pete we would go there and hang out and sell lemonade bottles for a penny. We always had fun at Strawberry Fields. So that's where I got the name. But I used it as an image. Strawberry Fields forever."

Lennon wrote this song whilst he was in Spain working on a movie called "How I won the war."

Significance of WW1 - The last post

When do you hear this song?

- You usually hear this song at a dawn service or back then you would hear it very frequently. Remembrance day/memorials.

Why is this song significant/important to New Zealand?

- To remember those who lost their lives whilst fighting for their countries during WW1. It is known all around the world and everyone recognizes the song.

What is the story behind the last post? Why was it played and when?

- This song was played when the soldiers were ordered to do something or if it was dinner time. It was a sign for the soldiers to move. Kind of like a bell, this sound has been played since the mid 1800's which is a long time before WW1, so this song has been used for many different things even before WW1.

What does this song represent?

- This song represents the fallen soldiers who have gone before us, it's a way we remember them and what they have done for our nation.

During the dawn services it is in a dark setting (dawn) because that is when our soldiers arrived at Gallipoli.

Testing pH - Science

Today in science we did an experiment testing the pH range of different house hold items.

Aim: To test the pH range of house hold items.

Equipment: A variety of household chemicals, spotting tile, red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, universal indicator solution, safety glasses.

Method:

1 - Add a few drops of each chemical to a spot on your spotting tile. If a substance is solid or powdered you will need to mix it with a few drops of water before testing it.

2 - Test the chemicals with both litmus papers.

3 - Test each chemical with a few drops of universal indicator.

Discussion: We are finding out if the household item is an acid or base. We do this by getting a household item like floor cleaner for example. The colour it turned with the blue litmus paper was violet, it turned indigo with blue litmus paper and then orange with universal indicator. On the pH scale violet and indigo are bases so floor cleaner is more of a base rather than an acid.

Results: Here is a photo of my results from my sci pad.

Here are some photos from the experiment too.
