Bonus Activity: Waka Ama

Waka Ama -

I would like to try it I didn't see any girls but if they were allowed I would try. It looks very tiring but also very fun, so I would give it a go but I would have to choose a lot of friends

  1. Hi Chloe,

My name's Ruby from the Summer Learning Journey and I will be one of the people blogging with you this summer. I'm super excited to read about what you have to say on your blog.

You are very brave to want to give it a go. I think it would be important to do it with friends too as that would make it more fun. You would definitely be allowed, Waka Ama racing is for boys and girls.
Next time, you might want to watch where you need full-stops. It may be helpful to read your writing out aloud to help you with this.

I don't think I would like to be in a race myself. I'm not very good at swimming so I would be worried I would fall out of the waka and into the sea!

Have you ever been in a kayak or a canoe before? If you enjoyed that, I think you would enjoy one of these races as well.

I look forward to reading more of your blog.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.

  2. Hey Chloe,

This is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey 2018, I will also be reading your blogs and commenting on them. I look forward to blogging with you this summer.

Well done for completing the bonus activity! I like how you mentioned that you would give it a try. I think that's what really counts - participating and giving a go. Also, Waka Ama race is a sport that anyone could take part in, any age and gender!

I too want to participate and be in the race myself as I enjoy kayaking. I believe that Waka Ama race would be similar to Kayaking. I would have to give it a go to find out more about the race! It would definitely be a fun activity to do with friends and family!

Ka pai for completing all the day 1 activities! I look forward to reading more of your blog posts :) Keep up the good work!

    All the best,

    Jade C.

  3. Kia Ora Chloe,

It’s great to read that you would give it a try. I think it’s awesome to have such a positive attitude when it comes to trying new things.
At Auckland University there is a Waka Ama race every year where lots of people who haven’t tried Wama Ama before, train and compete. Lots of people want a chance to paddle in the race because the winners get a trip to Hawaii!

I’m sure you would be able to find other people that want to give it a try and in no time, you would have enough paddlers for a waka! I think with some training, it wouldn’t be too tiring.

I hope to read more of your blogs soon!

    -Dani
